OUCH! My Tooth Hurts

Dental Emergencies: Signs, Symptoms and What to Do

When a dental emergency occurs, finding a dental office that offers same-day or walk-in emergency appointments is essential. If not promptly treated by a skilled emergency dentist, damaged teeth, oral infections, and other serious oral health issues can result in permanent tooth loss and other complications.

The most obvious sign of an emergency dental issue is sudden or worsening tooth pain or sensitivity. The following are examples of pain-related dental issues that should not be ignored.

LOST TOOTH

When a tooth is knocked out completely, it can be highly upsetting. In many cases, the tooth can be saved with prompt attention.

TOOTH DECAY

Tooth decay can happen no matter how well you take care of your teeth. It can create unbearable tooth pain that demands emergency dental care.

ABSCESSED GUM

A damaged tooth can open to the door to a serious bacterial infection of the tooth or gum. Common symptoms include a pus-filled abscess at the site of the infection as well as pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

PROBLEMS WITH FILLINGS

Loose or lost fillings can interfere with your ability to chew properly and make you reluctant to smile. The affected teeth are also more vulnerable to infection and decay.

BRUXISM

Grinding your teeth at night can cause damage to your teeth, such as chips, cracks and worn enamel, which merits urgent dental care. Persistent facial and mouth pain that radiates to the shoulders, neck, and ears are common symptoms of bruxism.

STRANGE SINUS PRESSURE

If you have a sensation of sinus pressure that you can’t explain, it could have a dental origin. Problems like impacted teeth or dental infections could be culprits for uncomfortable sinus pressure, and they benefit from prompt treatment.

Other common dental issues that warrant a dental emergency include, acute tooth pain, sensitivity, fractured teeth, broken or lost crowns, and braces pain or damage to wires. Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time, so it’s important to know these symptoms and where your nearest emergency dental office is for the health of your teeth and gums.
